Washington is a town in Craven County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Washington was founded in 1827 by Captain James A. Moore and his wife Eleanor. The first known settler in what is now Washington was George Rogers Clark who arrived in 1784 and named it for himself and his father-in-law Lord Loudoun of Scotland. In 1830, General David Hunter founded a post office here with the name of "Hendersonville." Hendersonville became the county seat in 1855 but until 1870 it was located at Washington because that is where the courthouse stood until moved to Charlotte in 1895. In 1865, settlers began to arrive from Georgia to found what is now Union County; they were led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and named it for him because he had proposed that each township be called after a general or admiral who had fought during the American Revolution (George Rogers Clark being one). By 1871, there were over 100 people living here; by 1900, there were only 10 residents left. The grist mill which still stands today on Main Street started operating around this time as well as other businesses like a bakery and druggist. When World War I began in 1914, many Americans came home from service and set up shop here before moving on to other parts of North Carolina or leaving for good when hostilities ended six years later. After the war ended, more families came back to Washington and many more businesses opened up including a dry goods store operated under license from JBS Wrigley Company which remains open today as an anchor tenant at 515 Main Street across from US Bank Arena (home of NC State University basketball). The post office closed its doors for good on July 15th 1953 due to lack of customers but reopened again October 3rd 1954 under new management as First National Bancorp Post Office/ Processing Center with jurisdiction over Craven County excepting Hendersonville which continued to serve as county seat until 1971 when that too ceased operations due to population growth within Craven County itself (the current dayCraven County Courthouse Annex serving as both county courthouse and administrative offices occupied space once used by First National Bancorp) In 1969 First National merged with another bank forming Atlantic Southeast Bankshares & Trust Company so renamedAtlantic Southeast Bankshares & Trust Corporation #1 on November 1st 1969 effective December 15th 1969 according To Change Order no: 12-C-00002 issued By Authority Of The Board Of Directors Of Atlantic Southeast Bankshares Incorporated Thereafter On January 1st 1970 This company merged into N C State Teachers College District No: 202 recognizing its affiliation with N C State University .Washington has always been an important community with many businesses present throughout its history; however recent trends point towards overall decline due largely to several factors such as high cost of living combined with competition from larger cities outside Craven Count
