In the early 1800s, Washington, North Carolina was one of the most prosperous and advanced areas in America. The region had recently been won by the United States in a bloody battle against Spain and its colonies, which had resulted in a large influx of new settlers. One of these newcomers was Nathaniel P. Banks, who founded NC Bank in 1819. With this newfound wealth, Banks started purchasing land for his bank and built one of America's first commercial buildings – the first such structure to be erected in Raleigh. He also began importing European optics from Great Britain and Sweden as well as American glassware from Massachusetts Bay. These factors helpedNC Bank become one of AMERICA'S leading financial institutions during this time. In 1824, Nathaniel P. Banks donated his entire fortune – worth over $2 million at the time – to build an addition to NC Bank's building that would become known as the "Banks Tower." This structure served as NC Bank's headquarters until it was destroyed by fire in 1951. However, it is still popularly regarded as one of Raleigh's most important landmarks dating back to this period!

Washington is a small town in North Carolina, located in Wake County. The population was 2,826 as of the 2010 census. A gristmill opened in 1830 and a flour mill followed soon afterward; these mills were replaced by a cheese factory built in 1865 which continued to be used until 1977 when it closed because of deterioration. In 1870, Washington had 1 black resident; this number increased to 4 In 1840, John Witherspoon patented a system for harvesting wild rice called Catoctin Crops that became known as "Witherspoon's Technique." This technique allowed farmers to harvest rice while leaving behind stocks of clean water that could be used for other purposes such as irrigation or domestic use In 1861–1862 NC Legislature enacted House Bill No. 108 which provided voting rights for African Americans throughout the state In 1865 when US Civil War began Congress passed an act entitled An Act to Erect Post Offices within certain Districts Within This State For Negroes Which Was Signed By President Abraham Lincoln on April 14th 1865 On October 10th 1865 General William Tecumseh Sherman crossed into North Carolina from Georgia at Fort Fisher Bridge during Sherman's March Through South Carolina
