Washington, North Carolina is home to the first tool store in the state. The store was opened by a man named Amos Kendall in 1798. Kendall was a freedman who owned land in eastern North Carolina and started selling tools to farmers and fishermen. He also began to sell tools himself from his shop on High Street in Wilmington. By 1812, Kendall had two stores, one in Wilmington and one in Raleigh. In 1816, he sold his business to John Henson, who renamed it The Kendall Store. The store continued to be operated by Kendall and his son until 1830 when it became part of the Henson-Moses Hardware Company. Washington is a small, rural town in North Carolina. It is located on the banks of the Dan River, about 20 miles east of Chapel Hill. The population was 2,547 at the 2000 census. The first permanent settler in Washington was Major John Andros in 1784. Other early settlers included Captain James Cook and his family who made a landing in 1786 on the present site of Chapel Hill. The Andros family continued to live in Washington until 1814 when they sold their land to Colonel Tryon for $3,000. When Tryon died in 1819 his son, William Tryon took over management of the estate and changed its name to Washington County. In 1830-31 General Beecher addressed a meeting of Delaware men living near Raleigh on what is now Highway 336 and said: "I come from Wilmington (north Carolina) with these thoughts that we are all brethren here." This was an indication that people were beginning to arrive in significant numbers for religious services and trade purposes within what would become North Carolina. In 1835 Reverend Wiley appointed George White as pastor of Washington Presbyterian Church which had been established two years earlier by Revs Alexander Henderson and David Catawba opposite Chowan Presbyterian Church on Pee Dee Island off Georgetown County shoreline northeast of Wilmington (now Durham). From 1840-1857 there were several pastors but little change except that church membership increased gradually from around 1,500 to 6,000 by 1860 when it reached 10,000 full members including women Bible teachers and ministers such as Harriet Beecher Stowe who wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin while serving as president of Macedonia Female Seminary at Durham University between 1852-55; her husband Edward Everett Hale also served as governor during this time period A new courthouse was built in 1865 which became known as "The White House" after President Abraham Lincoln who spent one night there before leaving for Harpers Ferry where he faced Confederate forces During Reconstruction efforts began by local Democrats to reestablish white collar economic activity some progress was made although most African Americans remained illiterate or worked below poverty lines A constitutional amendment granting voting rights to black citizens was passed but did not take effect until 1965 By 1880 Washington had 9 churches with 10 congregations with male/female communion being offered; however only 3% attend services today Although access to education has improved since then many residents remain uneducated or work low paying jobs Agricultural production declined after World War I due largely to competition from new industrializers such as Tobacco Manufacturing Company Incorporated followed by other processors like Grain Processing Corporation One major event which affected Washington during this time occurred when Drayton Hogg led UNC Asheville students onto UNC Greensboro campus late one evening sparking off a series of protests against high tuition rates at state universities On February 7th 1865 eight students were arrested along with three faculty advisors Nathan Bedford Forrest National Union Commander
