The first group of Cherokees left in 1776, but the remainder of the tribecircumstanced themselves with removal proceedings until 1837. In 1839, a treaty was ratified between the United States and the Cherokee Nation and provided for their permanent resettlement on Indian Territory (now Oklahoma).
