Washington is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, on the border of Alamance County and Durham County. It is the county seat for both Alamance and Durham counties. The population was 17,191 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Washington was Andrew Johnson, who arrived there in 1810 from Tennessee. He was followed by his brother-in-law Jesse Hillyer, who built a cabin near present day Chapel Hill on Hagan Boulevard in 1812. In 1814, General James Kenedy established a post office at what is now Washington and this became the first town in Alamance County. In 1836, following Indian Removal Act of 1830 which removed all Native Americans living east of Raleigh across Wake County lines to Arkansas Territory, General Nathaniel Banks ordered Colonel Thomas Jesup to besiege Fort Johnston at Chowan River Bridge over Yadkin River (now Wilson Mill Road) and remove all Indian occupants from that area; however these orders were not fully executed as most of the Indians managed to escape before they could be arrested or killed by Battalion Captain Jesup's troops under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Ewing . Some early residents include Methodist Episcopal Reverend WileyBryan (1793-1858), farmer John Chilton (1811-1887), lawyer Samuel Nash (1800-1872), physician Drury Colfax (1798-1860), Enoch Pratt School founder Ebenezer Eaton (1771-1846) and lumberman Wm. Fenton Hodges Sr.. The town had its start when a wagon road led from Charlotte through Albemarle County to Greensboro where goods could be unloaded and transported back into Charlotte without having to go through much countryside - something that would have been very valuable during an era when goods traveled by wagon only one way! Eldon Dozier also settle here around this time but it wasn't until after he bought land northwest of Chapel Hill that he started draining water off his pond so he could build a dam which eventually became known as Dozier Lake! Dozier purchased 666 acres northwest of Chapel Hill from John Randolph Hearst for $5 per acre in 1898 – making him one of the earliest developers along Interstate 85 corridor northeast of Raleigh! In 1914 Dozier donated 1/4 mile (.50 miles) east of US 421 between Red Springs Rd./Highway 520 & I‑85 just southwesterlyOfSR 540/NC 12 travelor exit 493 for use as an interchange with NC TRANSIT bus service—- creating Watauga Lake Drive today! He died suddenly less than two weeks after donating this property–– leaving behind numerous descendants including current Mayor Darrel Ligon Washington remained unincorporated until 1955 when it incorporated as partofthe newly created Durham County . At its incorporation there were 24 businesses operating within Washington limits plus two services provided by government: A jail operated by the sheriff and tax assessors;and fire department consisting of six volunteer firefighters housed in three firehouses located close together on Orchard Park Avenue--northwest corner lot #2160—southwest corner lot 1634—east side lot 2501A—(now Sanford Drive)—all within walking distance or short car ride from each other...Today's Washington has more than 31000 residents working within its limits making it one helluva place to call home!

Washington is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 927 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County. The first white inhabitants of Washington were Andrew Johnston and his family who settled in 1792. In 1821, General James Kenedy fought a battle against Native American forces at Fort Alexander Henry in what is now Washington and lost after losing an astonishing 513 casualties including 33 officers and men. The name Washington comes from two places: one near present day Gastonia, North Carolina where General James Kenedy fought; and another location about 20 miles to the south-west of present day Washington where General John Forbes fought a smallpox epidemic in 1819-20 which killed many people. The first post office was established at Washington on October 12, 1824 by George Stephenson with the name of "Creektown". A new post office was created at Gastonia on October 15th, 1836 by Jno Covington with the name of "Gastonville". In May 1861, during the American Civil War (1861- 1865), Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through Gastonia on their way to Greensboro to attack Union supplies moving over the Cumberland Gap In 1903, following several years of planning by local officials and citizens alike, a depot was built along US 421/NC 280 just north of town for shipment of cornstarch from fields east of town to market in Raleigh. This process started slowly but steadily grew more popular as transportation became easier and prices dropped for agricultural goods brought into town from outlying areas than traveling long distances by wagon or horseback. By 1912 there were sixteen trucksloading tons per day coming into town making it one of America's largest trade hubs for agricultural products then or anyplace else in this era The growth continued as production increased until World War II when most all local production shifted inland to support wartime needs such as aircraft manufacturing plants farms producing tobacco etc... Finally these days we can see some evidence that some development may be taking place as businesses are opening up here again such as Google Fiber having been built right next door to Town Hall
Washington was founded in 1775 by George Washington and the other Continental Officers as a military post on the southern border of North Carolina. It remained a military installation until 1810, when it became a town and then an incorporated city. The area now known as Washington was part of Cherokee Nation before white settlement began in the region.
