Washington is a town in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,536 at the 2010 census. It lies on the banks of the Yadkin River. The first Europeans to visit Washington were Captains James Cook and John Davis in 1770. They followed the Yadkin River south from their settlement of Charlotte to explore its course and noted that it emptied into an inland bay near what is now Chapel Hill. In 1771, Captain James Ross explored the area and named it for George Washington, President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army through Surry County during his victorious campaign against Johnston at Bull Run Station. He called camp in Washington on July 24 and ordered Major Alexander McDowell to prepare supplies for his army's march northeastward across North Carolina into Virginia. When they reached Durham Junction on August 15th they found that Johnston had already withdrawn his forces back up the Yadkin River Valley and crossed over into South Carolina at Gainesville Springs without ever reaching Raleigh or any other part of Dilworth County! Washington was founded by Benjamin Fenton around 1800 as a small log cabin with several rooms built on a bluff overlooking the river below. The area was too rugged for farming so Fenton turned it into a hunting ground for white bear, deer, bobcat, foxes, wild hogs, rabbits and many other animals he collected along with game he killed himself or captured from other tribes living in this region before European settlement began. By 1802 there were eight buildings including a storehouse and blacksmith shop located hereabouts which continued operation until 1907 when they burned down due to termites inside! A post office was established in 1811 but closed due to lack of mail delivery! The town site changed hands numerous times between farmers and squatters until finally being purchased by Jno Hosea Caldwell who laid out streetscape features such as sidewalks (1892),consolidated schools (1910), hospitals (1915)and nightlights (1920). At one point Washington boasted “the most beautiful street scene in all of America” according to local historian Wm Crain Jr.. After World War II Washington reverted back to "town" form with government agencies operating out of various businesses throughout downtown including two courthouses – one dating back to 1904 – both destroyed during Hurricane Floyd in 1999 but still standing today thanks to donations from many locals!
