The first firearms in Wake Forest were a shotgun and a rifle. The shotguns were brought over by the military in 1824, and the rifles were brought over by settlers in 1835. The first gun store was opened in 1845, and the first handgun shop was opened in 1865. In 1907, the NC State Senate passed a bill that made it illegal to sell or carry any guns without a license. This law went into effect on July 1st of that year. In 1934, the NC General Assembly passed another bill that made it illegal toimport any handguns without proper permits. This law went into effect on January 1st of 1935.In 1938, a state flag referendum was held to decide whether or not to adopt an NRA assault weapons ban. The vote was 54% for adoption, but the ban never became effective because it was repealed two years later by the NC House of Representatives. As of September 2017, there are only 12 registered handguns in Wake Forest out of an estimated 2 million total firearms across North Carolina (the vast majority are owned by individuals). The current campus is located on 240 acres (98 hectares) at the edge of downtown Winston-Salem, adjacent to the Duke Energy Center and near several major city streets. It has a student body of over 11,000 students and faculty of more than 750. The history of Wake Forest can be traced back to 1892 when Rev. John Wakefield established an affiliated school of the Methodist Episcopal Church within the limits of Winston Salem County, North Carolina. At that time, it was one of only two universities in North Carolina with a college degree program for men and one of only two universities in North America with collegiate degrees for women. In 1933, Wake Forest became an independent institution and adopted its present name – Wake Forest University – after purchasing land east of downtown Winston-Salem from local businessmen James Fenton and Wm. Clements Knight II. In 1967, both schools merged to form the NC State University system under new leadership which included Drs. Edward Bacon (University President) and Floyd Abrams (President/CEO). The merger resulted in significant growth opportunities for both institutions as well as improved working relationships among them; this led to increased interdependence between them as well as increased sharing in resources such as teaching laboratories, research facilities and student services precincts across all eight campuses involved in the NC State University system including Wake Forest School Of Medicine & Dentistry, NC Agricultural Experiment Station, NC Institute Of Technology & Research School Of Engineering And Applied Sciences, Durham Technical Community College & Duke Economy Institute;[1][2] however some concerns were voiced about potential duplication or overlap within these organizations following reports suggesting that UNC Chapel Hill had been doing too much research on behalf ofNC State while Duke was doing too little on behalf of UNC Chapel Hill[3][4]. These issues were resolved through a collaborative process known as “The Triangle Initiative” which saw representatives from each campus participating together in monthly meetings chaired by their respective presidents until any duplication or overlapping had been eliminated[5]. This approach allowed for close collaboration between researchers from each campus while still allowing individual institutions maximum autonomy within their specific fields; this arrangement has survived into today’s era where many researchers cross boundaries between different campuses to conduct their work.[6] In 1976–77 Drs Randolph Blythe III (Dean), William McKay (Vice Chancellor),and Clifford Berryhill (Director General) initiated what would become known as “The Drive for Excellence” which called for every faculty member at Wake Forrest to give special attention to students who showed promise but did not yet reach academic excellence level so that they might be better prepared for future success at our institution[7]. This effort helped prepare many future leaders including Demonte Barnes(First African American Dean), Wendell Berry( professor emeritus ), Beverly Crump( Professor Emerita )and Linda Dillon( Assistant Professor ). During this time period also arose controversies surrounding race relations at our institution with Black athletes being refused admission while White athletes were accepted without protest; however these incidents ultimately failed to detract from overall progress made during this time frame[8][9]. In 1990 Wade Hampton purchased 20 acres next door to Raleigh's PNC Arena resulting in substantial expansion plans funded primarily by state funding which eventually led to construction beginning on September 16th 1991 - now hometo five NCAA Division I sports teams: men’s basketball (#1 nationally)[10], women’s basketball (#14 nationally)[11], baseball (#12 nationally,[12]), wrestling (#19 USA Today Coaches Poll#1/#2/#3/#4/#5/#6)[13]) Additionally there are numerous professional sporting events hosted at either stadium including NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four appearances (+2007&2009), ACC Men’s Soccer Championship games (+2011&2013), ACC Women’s Soccer Championship games (+2003&2005)), NBA Finals appearances (−2012) In total since 1991 over $200 million has been invested by NC State University System members into renovations and expansions totaling over 1 ½ million sqft inside current buildings plus acquisitions totaling nearly 2 ½ million sqft outside including new athletic venues (PNC Arena / Greensboro Coliseum Complex / Time Warner Cable Arena / FirstEnergy Stadium Charlotte) along with dozens of housing units developments providing temporary housing during inclement weather conditions . These projects have created thousands jobs along with significant infrastructure improvements throughout town ensuring continued quality education provided by our community colleges while making Raleigh available 24/7 access through multiple modes OF transportation . further expanding beyond athletics [ 14 ] Today Wakeforest features world-renowned faculty members who pursue diverse scholarly pursuits across six faculties comprising humanities/humanities/social sciences/natural sciences/engineering/computer science/, mathematics/, economics/, political science/, religions/.
