The first settlement in what is now Thomasville was made on a small island in McDowell River about 12 miles (19 km) upstream from present day Thomasville on July 11, 1784 by John Sevier and his brother James Sevier. They named their new town for General George Washington who had recently evacuated from Yorktown during the American Revolution. At first there were only 10 people living in this new town which consisted of just a few houses on an island in McDowell River. One of the first things that Governor Tryon did when he took office in 1819 was establish a post office here with mail being carried twice a week between Raleigh and Charlotte then via Wilmington to Petersburg onslow county line In 1834 two brothers named James Aiken founded what would become known as "Aiken's Store" across from modern day downtown Thomasville Initially it was just an agricultural store but soon started selling hardware and other items In 1853 Pritchard Masons & Iron Works built one of largest cotton ginners in America here Today Aiken's Store still operates as a local landmark providing retail services including groceries and souvenirs The community also became home to Northern State Teachers College until it closed its doors in 1987 James Witherspoon served as president from 1915 until his death in 1955
