The Thomasville Rifle Club was organized in 1892. The club is named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee, who skirmished at Thomasville in 1861. The rifle club competed in local, state, and national tournaments from its inception until the late 1800s. In 1902, the club joined the National Rifle Association and has continued to compete through today’s NRA program. In 1862, Confederate General Robert E. Lee fought at Thomasville against Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant. After the battle,Lee stayed behind to survey the damage done to his forces by Grant’s army and decided that a more permanent home for his military operations would be near Raleigh, North Carolina. He ordered his men to move south and rendezvous with their comrades at Fort Sumter on April 12th of 1862. Upon learning of this decision, Union General George Buell sent an order ordering all Confederate units east of Knoxville to fall back towards Raleigh or face annihilation1). On April 14th 1862 Samuel Jourdan arrived at Raleigh with 1st US Cavalry Regiment (5th Brigade) under command of Major-General James Longstreet2). Jourdan was dispatched by Governor Brownlow3) as envoy extraordinaire tasked with negotiating a surrender from Johnston4). On April 15th 1862 Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Raleigh with 4500 cavalry troops5) looking to invade North Carolina6)). At 4pm on April 15th 1865 Union General Ulysses S. Grant reached Durhamtown7) after days of combing through miles of countryside8)) looking for signs of rebel activity9)). When he found no sign of rebels or enemy troop movements he concluded that Johnston had surrendered unconditionally10)))

In 1861-1865, during the American Civil War, many residents sided with Confederate forces over Union troops; as a result, much property was destroyed or taken over by Union soldiers. After victory came freedom and Reconstruction took hold in America—a time when black Americans were allowed to vote and own property—most African Americans left for former slave states such as Louisiana or Mississippi before returning to found communities like Thomasville after World War II endedeared them more to America than ever before. Today, much has changed since 1861: InThomasville lies one of only two remaining school districts with black teachers (in Alamance County) and one African American mayor (John Meeks). There are also several businesses open to all races including restaurants/cafes/bars/stores; locally owned hardware stores have disappeared but can be found scattered around town near schools (although they used to be quite numerous).
