Thomasville is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Robeson County after Charlotte. Thomasville has been home to an area of rifle shooting for over 100 years and it is still one of the most popular places to shoot in the county. Rifle shooting events have taken place throughout the year including state championships and national competitions. The first rifle shootings took place in 1868 when two men from nearby Cherokee Village decided to take part in a hunting competition near Thomasville. At that time there were no safety devices such as stocks or rifles with rifling on them and so people were killed very easily by other participants who did not understand what they were doing. In 1871 a group of men from Cherokee Village formed the Appalachian Rifle Association which started organizing shoots across western North Carolina. This association led to the establishment of NRA headquarters in Asheville, North Carolina in 1911 where they continue to hold meetings today. In 1924 NRA established their own magazine called "Rifleman" which continues today as one of the leading firearms magazines in America

Thomasville was founded in 1785 by General Hugh Lawson and his wife, Elizabeth. The town was named after Thomas Jefferson, the first U.S. president. In 1854, Thomasville became a city and was renamed to honor President Pierce Butler. The city's main thoroughfare is called "Jefferson Boulevard."
