Thomasville is a small town in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Gastonia, NC–WSET urban area.
The town was founded in 1802 by General James Moore and his family. Moore's heirs sold it to Daniel Boone in 1819. The first post office in Thomasville was established in 1820. In 1830, the town became a seat of government for Edgecombe County under Governor John C Williamson. In 1849, Thomasville became the county seat for North Carolina when Alamance and Union counties were combined into that state.
In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E Lee attacked and burned Thomasville while its people slept after taking over the town from Union forces under Brigadier General William Pritchett. One resident reported: "When we heard firing we went out on our roof to see if it was friendly fire but soon realized that shelling had commenced from across the street where their artillery stood." By 1865, when Union forces recaptured Thomasville following an attack by Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Kirby Smith (the same general who had burned Thomasville), most of the buildings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair by gunfire and mortar shells from Union forces occupying what remained ofThomasville after they withdrew from East Tennessee).
The last post office closed on September 14, 1984; all mail now goes through Raleigh-Durham postal service instead.
Today only a few residents still maintain old downtown businesses including The Gilded Cage bar which opened in 1865 as one of three saloons run by local women known as "Queen Bee" Harrells; Mrs Hargrave's grocery store which opened 1924 as one of several pioneer mom-and-pop stores catering to farmers' markets until 1978; and Mrs White's bed & breakfast inn which opened 1975 as one of only two B&Bs remaining open within 10 miles outside Raleigh proper.
Although many older buildings have been replaced with newer ones or are being used for other purposes such as housing developments or retail space, some historic neighborhoods such as Green Hills remain largely unchanged.
At present there are no schools within walking distance of any residences except for Stonington Elementary School located about 2 blocks east of downtown alongguyen Ave., which has new construction ongoing.
