The native son of Thomasville's first settler, Jesse Hines, in 1814 founded what would become the largest cotton plantation in North Carolina and one of the most extensive in the country. Today Thomasville remains an agricultural center with cattle and hog raising accounting for most of its economic activity; however, it also has a growing nightlife and recreation scene as well as several high-tech companies that are major players in Durham County's economy. The area now called downtown Thomasville was originally established on Indianola Creek near what is now downtown Chapel Hill and became known as "the Hub" due to its location as an important junction on two main routes linking Northern Virginia with Raleigh and Wilmington respectively. In 1851, when Governor Alexander Stephens announced his nominees for President of the United States, he nominated James Buchanan instead of John Fenton because Buchanan had been speaker of the House (and one vote shy) during Fenton's term as governor. A group of men led by Nathaniel Bedford Forrest travelled to Chapel Hill to campaign against Buchanan and they decided to name their new town after him – "Thomasville" - which they did on April 14th, 1851. For many years thereafter, "Thomasville" served as both their local name and their official address since it was only about a mile from the state house at Tryon Palace where they held their campaigns! In 1912 Mayor Wigglesworth convinced King George V to create a park within walking distance of Tryon Palace dedicated to all Americans who have fought for Britain during World War I – this park today still bears Mr Wigglesworth's name! Today much like then, Thomasville remains an agricultural center with cattle and hograising accounting for most of its economic activity; however it also has a growing nightlife and recreation scene including several high-tech companies that are major players in Durham County’s economy such as Duke Energy (formerly Duke Power), WakeMed Hospitality (now Wake Forest University Health Science Center), NCR Corporation (formerly National Carpet/Lumber Co.), PNC Financial Services (now Capital One Bank), Time Warner Cable Broadcasting Stations #1 & 2*, Duke Energy Tourist Development Company*, NCR Corporation* * These latter three companies just announced plans to build over 100 jobs each at their locations alone over five years! And don't forget about our hometown heroes...the Dunkin' Donuts franchisees who continue doughnuts until late into the evening every day regardless of weather conditions or holiday specials!
