In 1870, Union County was divided into two districts and Thomasville became part of District 5A. The population in District 5A decreased from 3,000 to 1,500 during the 1870s because new businesses were opened in other parts of Union County. However, by 1880 the district's population was back up to 2,500 people because new businesses were opening in Thomasville as well as elsewhere in North Carolina.
