When he was only a child, his family moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Tommy attended public schools there until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1917. He served in World War I as an artilleryman and then became an infantryman in the war’s final stages. After the war ended, Tommy returned to Thomasville and started a small grocery store with his father. In 1933, Tommy married Lillie Mae Harnett and they bought a large home on Harrison Street in Tomballtown. They raised their children here until Lillie Mae passed away in 1988. Over the years, Tommy worked hard to maintain his grocery store while also becoming involved with many local organizations including Rotary Club of Chapel Hill (1934-1978), Presbyterian Church of Thomasville (1979-1988), American Legion Post 455 (1986-present),Thomasville Chamber of Commerce (1991-1998) and more. He is buried at West Point Cemetery in Chapel Hill where he resided for most of his life. In 1984, after many years of drought conditions that hadむしろseverely impacted agriculture across much of the region, Governor Jerry Brownsigned legislation creating the Western Carolina Regional Development Authority which would provide financial support to farmers throughout westernNorth Carolina through programs such as crop insurance and credit counseling.
