In 1912, the Dickey's moved their store to its current location on Main Street, across from the Pritchett Paper Company. After many years of growth and change at their store, Mr. and Mrs. Dickey passed away in 1957 and 1957 respectively, leaving behind a legacy of success for their Store which continues today with over 20 years of experience!
Thomasville is a town in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. At one time it was the largest city in Davidson County by population. It is now part of Charlotte. The first white settlers in what is now Thomasville were farmers and their families who came from northumberland county, Virginia in 1814. They named their new community after Major General Edward Thomas, an officer of the British Army during the American Revolution and later U.S. Secretary of War under George Washington. A post office called Thomasville was established in 1821, and remained in operation until 1865. In 1824 a group of men from Rutherford County founded what would become Charlotte on May 10th as a small trading post with three stores and thirty-six residents. In 1830 a political organization calling themselves the "Democratic Republicans" was formed to oppose Jacksonian Republican rule in Davidson County; this group became known as the Anti-Jacksonians or "Tommyknights". The fortuitous discovery of coal near Whatley Creek led to extensive mining operations here beginning around 1840; by 1853 Thomasville had become one of America's most important coal mining towns with over 100 mines operating throughout its territory (the rest being scattered around Rutherford and McDowell Counties). By 1860 there were 1,500 inhabitants living in what is today downtown Thompsville; approximately half of these lived within two blocks of each other on Main Street (now Meeting Streets)). Coalmining continued into the 20th century with numerous surface impacts on local environment including water quality degradation as well as health risksassociated with exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic and lead; however surface mining ceased completely by 1984 when all but two mines closed due to environmental concerns aboutPage 9of 11
