Thomasville is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Union County. The town was founded in 1792 by Captain John Johnston and his comrades from Fort Duplin as a post for riflemen on the Cumberland River. In 1811, Johnston's son-in-law, General James Moorehead, built a small cabin near the center of town to improve living conditions for residents. Thomasville grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location along US Routes 371 and 421 and its access to water supplies from two rivers. By 1870, it had become one of America's major textile towns with mills located throughout the downtown area and around milepost 12 on US 421. In 1887, local businessmen organized a new city government and renamed it Thomasville after Confederate General Robert Easley Thomas (1814–1893). During World War II, many factories closed in Thomasville due to wartime shortages of materials; however, most remained open until the early 1960s when they were taken over by other companies or merged into larger ones. However, some smaller businesses continued to operate until the late 1990s when they were all forced out of business by economic changes in North Carolina that made those businesses unprofitable or too costly to maintain. After years of decline and discussion about whether or not to abandon town altogether, voters passed an ordinance establishing a city government in 2000 which has helped revived downtown areas as well as increasing tourism opportunities in town since then. The current mayor is Driscoll Barnes who was elected in November 2006 elections with 54% of the vote against Republican nominee Donny Cookman's 44%.
