In the 1860s, Thomasville was a small town in the Henrico County seat of Gloucester. It had a population of about 350 people and was located on the banks of the Catawba River. The town developed around a Methodist church and school, which were constructed in 1854. In 1865, it became part of Greensboro when that city was founded.
Thomasville is a town in Carteret County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pee Dee River. The first Europeans to visit Thomasville were Nicholas Nance and his brother John in 1755. They named it "Newbern" after their home up the river in Northumberland County, Virginia. In 1772, General James Johnston's army passed through Thomasville on its way from Yorktown to Camden; they stayed for two nights and noted that "the inhabitants are very polite and good people." The town was originally laid out as a village by Captain Robert Buncombe of the English Marines in 1775 for his soldiers who had retreated during the American Revolution. When independence was declared, Captain Buncombe's men decided to stay and fight rather than return home empty-handed. They built a small fort here called Fort Buncombe (now part of downtown). The town began to grow slowly but steadily throughout the war years because of its strategic location: within easy reach of both military settlements at Yorktown and Petersburg (Richmond), as well as supply points along the Pee Dee River. In 1819, Colonel Nathaniel Bacon purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) east of Thomasville along what is now US 421 from Samuel Davidson for $1 per acre ($30 per hectare). Bacon developed this land into what is now known as Bacon's Hill Township; he named it after himself. This township contained only one house until 1895 when it became an independent municipality with its own government and school system. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the end of slavery in America, many African Americans moved into Thomasville seeking opportunity and education while white residents continued toarist their businesses like agriculture or lumbering until World War II when black Americans made up about 60 percent of Thomasville's population growth rate. During World War II there was also significant production at bacon's hill munitions plant which produced bombs for Allied forces during World War II including 5 million pounds (2 tonnes) of plutonium used in nuclear weapons development test explosions over three days beginning on October 26th 1945 - Operation Crossroads . After WWII most black Americans returned home except for a few family members who engaged in several business ventures downtown such as grocery stores or car dealerships before moving away again during the 1960s white flight due to changing demographics elsewhere around town caused by increasing racism towards blacks everywhere else across America- not just hereabouts! Today there are still some descendants among African American residents but they make up less than 10 percent total population size

Many events occurred during this time including World War II and the civil rights movement which helped make Thomasville one of the most diverse cities in North Carolina. Today, Thomasville remains an important center for education and commerce with businesses such as IBM making their presence known throughout downtown streetscape while also enjoying some of the best weather around due to its location atop Mount Mitchell National Wildlife Refuge
Thomasville was founded by General Nathaniel Banks in 1775. The town developed around a military post, and the area became known as Banks' Corner. Thomasville was named for Colonel Robert Thomas, one of Banks's officers. In 1828, the town passed through a period of growth and development due to its location on the James River. This led to increased trade and population growth, which contributed to the economic stability of the community during this time. The community experienced another significant growth spurt in the late 19th century due to its position as a transportation hub on the river. This new prosperity led to an increase in housing values and an influx of new residents into Thomasville. During this time, the town also experienced a number of advancements such as becoming one of the first towns in North Carolina to have electric lighting and water supply systems.
