Thomasville is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Forsyth County. The town was named for General Thomas Pemberton and his father-in-law Colonel John C. Smith, both of whom were major general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War. Forsyth County was formed on November 3, 1821 from part of Randolph County and named for General James Fayette Forsyth (1753–1835), who had fought in the Mexican War and later served as United States Ambassador to Spain. The present boundaries of Forsyth County were set by an act of the General Assembly on February 22, 1911. The first permanent white inhabitants in what is now Forsyth County were two families that moved from Raleigh to Thomasville early in 1827: Captain David Hance's family and Drury's family. In 1830, Ebenezer Cook established himself as a doctor in Thomasville with his wife Elizabeth Cook and their five children: Ebenezer Cook Jr., Sarah Cook Elder, William Cooke Sr., Charles Cooke Jr., and Nicholas Cooke; all future residents became citizens of this new community. In 1836 Major Ridgely Foard settled near Mount Holly after migrating from Virginia; he built a cabin there which still stands today as a historic landmark known as "Foard's Cabin." soon afterward other settlers arrived including Lieutenant Colonel Hugh Wofford (founder of Greeneville) who built Wofford House within one year of arriving there; it is now part of Greeneville University’s campus property. Other pioneer families include those from Scotland who came overland through Cumberland Gap near Knoxville; they called themselves Campbells after their leader Alexander Campbell (1796–1868). They also arrived with cattle which they brought down the Holston River valley to trade with local Native Americans; these people are also known as Scotsmen or Tennesseeans because many lived on land grants given to them by Sir Walter Scott (the author). In 1840 about seventy men traveled out into what is now Forsyth Count
