The first evidence of human activity in what is now Thomasville was an I-95 construction site which can still be seen today on the east side of town near Old US 1 and Amherst Street. In 1857 when the junction of I-95 and US 1 were completed, two small towns - Enon to the south and Carthage to the north - sprang up around this interchange creating what would eventually become Thomasville. In 1876, citizens of both towns petitioned North Carolina General Assembly to create a county seat for them as they felt their lack of representation led to their inability to compete with more populous municipalities such as Raleigh or Chapel Hill. A vote inadvisedly decided against this idea but it didn't stop two other towns from becoming counties: Elizabeth City to the west and Fayetteville to the east; both became full counties when local legislatures enfranchised contrary statewide wishes (i.e., without state legislative approval). In 1865, during Reconstruction following The Civil War, many Union soldiers who had served in Kentucky were brought back home by President Abraham Lincoln and given land west of Charlotte in Cumberland County as restitution for damages they had done while serving there as well as service on black troops under General Ulysses S. Grant throughout most of that year – including some time at Thomasville Plantation where they skirmished with Confederate forces during that key summer offensive called Operation Cross Keys (July 1861- September 1862). This particular group's only engagement came within easy firing range of ThomasVILLE residents' homes just after dark one evening in October 1862 when Union troops attempting to cross over into Mecklenburg County came across Confederate positions on Deep Creek Bridge about five miles southeast of downtown – unaware that civilians living nearby had been keeping watch from their homes all week long! It should also be noted here that plenty if not all white men enlisted/served duty during these pivotal years inside carpetbagging America so any stories about "lone wolf" soldiers are pure fiction put out by antiwar activists seeking political mileage prior to 2020 midterms...or worse yet may have actually happened!
