Thomasville is a town located in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,537 at the 2000 census. The name of the town is derived from Thomas Creek (or Pee Dee Creek). Tommy Thomas founded the town in 1867. He and his brothers-in-law James Fenton and John Copley developed a logging business that became successful. When production stopped in the early 20th century, Thomasville became an agricultural community with large farms supplying local markets with produce. In 1950, construction began on the Duke Energy coal mine which opened in 1951 and produced coal until 1984. The mill closed in 2001 but remained standing as a reminder of what once occurred in Tom's Town. Today, much of the downtown area has been redeveloped into apartments and businesses such as Target and UPS are located near the old mill building which still remains vacant since it was taken over by developers in 2013. TheThomasville Area School District currently operates four schools: East Catholic High School (grades 9-12), South Gaston Elementary School (K-5), North Gaston Elementary School (6-8), and West Gaston Middle/High School (9-12).

In 1792, a group of planters from Georgia discovered this land and began to purchase it from Native Americans who inhabited it before European settlement arrived. By 1800, there were several plantations located around what is now Thomasville. By 1830, most of these plantations had been sold to white farmers and slaveowners across South Carolina and Georgia including those located around Savannah, GA., which made it difficult for blacks to maintain their own plots of land despite owning individuals or families totaling over 4 million acres (16 square miles). This situation changed after Act No. 8 of 1850 granted African American men full voting rights withinKentucky limits as well as within all other free states during Reconstruction; this act also opened up new markets for black entrepreneurs such as David Dandridge who built one of the largest cotton gin operations in America outside Jackson Mississippi until his death in 1865 at age 71 years old In 1853, when Forsyth County was created from portions of Johnston County following Indian Removal policies enacted during Andrew Johnson’s presidency efforts), part of northern Forsyth County including what is now Thomasville lay within Johnston County but with no governance or representation by either party due to political instability caused by deep-seated racism against African Americans living within white society Today%, many people remember both General James Harnett’s victory in the 1860 Ulysses S Grant–led Civil War (which ended with his surrender at Appomattox Court House) as well as General Robert E Lee’s retreat through Union lines at Chancellorsville Courthouse just east of Tomlinson Lake while under fire from Union forces led by General John Pemberton – events that helped turn Virginia into a Confederate state following secession from the United States Harnett’s victory marked an end not only to Forsyth County’s status as an agricultural backwater but also its role as a stop on route linking Savannah with Charlotte down north In 1865 Harnett battlefield grave can be found just southwestof present day Main Street off Rte 221 near mile marker 183
Thomasville was founded in 1785 by Captain John Thomas and his wife, Susannah. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, especially the coal mines that were opened in the early 1800s. By 1851, Thomasville had a population of over 1,500 residents. In 1865, the United States acquired Thomasville from Britain for $10 million in what is known as the Treaty of Paris. The town was renamed Raleigh in honor of Ulysses S. Grant and other Unionists who fought for America during the Civil War.
