Thomasville is a town located in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,546 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1792 and named for Thomas Jefferson, then the President of the United States. It is part of the Durham–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thomasville is located on Interstate 85 south of Durham and north of Chapel Hill. Formally it was two towns: one called "Thomasville" to the east of I-85 and one called "Jefferson" to the west (the name given to it by James Robertson). In 1881, these two towns merged into one town under their present name. The first area in which Thomasville developed were its surrounding hillsides that offered fertile soil for agriculture. By 1800 there were several families living in what would become Thomasville (or "Jefferson"). One family - Alexander & Sarah Winns - started farming land around what became known as "Winns Corner". They raised crops such as corn, peas, beans, potatoes and tobacco; also operated a sawmill and gristmill nearby. In 1792 when South Carolina acquired this country from France during the French-American War (1794-97), Governor Tryon ordered Colonel John Brierly to erect a guard house at mile marker 7 on US Highway 421 near present day Thomasville to prevent any Native Americans from entering or escaping without permission from him. The colonel did so with his own hands before returning home that night after successfully repelling an Indian attack on his convoy while traveling through what would become Thomasville on September 15th – also known as “Pumpkin Day” because so many people participating in this event had their homes blessed by local preacher Amos Stroud – marking “the beginning of our connection with this community” according to later historian Hinton Peake Kimball Jr.. This fortification may have been built thanks to funding provided by General James Wilkinson who served as British Commander-in-Chief during the war; Wilkinson had been impressed by Colonel Brierly's work building Fort Johnston along I-85 just outside Raleigh! It wasn't until 1811 when hostilities ceased that troops began moving into what would eventually become Thomasvill

In 1827, the town became a city and was renamed Thomasville after General James K. Polk. The city has since grown to over 120,000 residents and is home to several major companies including Coca-Cola and Kimberly-Clark. Thomasville is located in the heart of the Piedmont region of North Carolina, on the banks of the Yadkin River. The town was founded in 1786 by Capt. James Robertson and named for his father, ThomasRobertson, a Scotch-Irish settler in nearby Huntersville. In 1821, Colonel John Settle moved his family to Thomasville from their original home near Salisbury and renamed it after himself. The town population reached 3,000 by 1827 and 5,000 by 1830. By 1871, Thomasville had 12 saloons and 100 stores. It became a city in 1907 and its population reached over 30,000 by 1930.
