This square land had been donated by James Gorman who resided near present-day Donelson Road and had offered his land for use as a village site. At first glance, it appeared that this donation would not be very helpful to Thomasville as there were no good roads or proper drainage available within reach of the new community. However, over time development occurred within walking distance of Gorman’s donation so much so that by 1875 it became known as “Gorman’s Corners” after James Gorman himself. In addition to becoming an important center for commerce within Union County, Thomasville also grew into being an important cultural destination due to its close proximity to Raleigh and Durham respectively. In 1870, when Wilmington opened up access to Interstate 85 through Eastern NC making it easier for goods brought into eastern North Carolina through Charlotte then down through Raleigh/Durham (and finally Elizabeth City), Thomasville quickly became leading interchange point between these two larger cities with many business owners moving their operations out of Wilmington altogether because they could now get directlyto consumers in Raleigh or Durham without having to go through Charlotte first! A number of theaters were built along Second Street during this time including the First National Opera House which opened its doors in 1875; both our current rotunda – built in 1913 – and original auditorium are evidence that even during these difficult times businesses still managed to make money! Today’s economy continues this trend with many businesses filling roles once filled only by bigger city-based counterparts such as chains such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts coming into town but still maintaining strong ties with their roots here in northeastern North Carolina! With all these positives associated withThomasville today – whether it be its rich past or continued success – one can only imagine just how amazing it must have been when it first came onto the map over 50 years ago!
