The town was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had fought in the War of 1812. The first gunsmith in Thomasville was James Hogg, who operated a shop on Court Street. In 1830, John Swayne opened his store on High Street. In 1836, Prentice Coffin bought a store from James Hogg. From then until 1861, when the Union Army invaded North Carolina, all stores withinThomasville wereownedby Confederate forces. During the Civil War (1861-1865), gun hammer production played an important role in the war effort because Union arms were not as good as Confederate weapons. For example, during the Battle of Gettysburg (July 3-7, 1863), Union forces used guns made by John Brown & Co., while Confederate forces used guns made by Samuel Colt & Sons. Gun hammer production resumed once hostilities ended and Union armies began rebuilding their arsenals nationwide. In 1865, local businessman Julius Weems purchased a store from Julius Simons located at 319 Main Street which had been closed down by the Confederacy two years earlier due to patriotic sentiment among citizens ofThomasville towards both sides of the conflict. Weems renamed his business "The National Armory" and continued production of firearms until 1898 when he sold it to Colonel George Armstrong Custer for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). During Reconstruction following the Civil War, Thomasville became an important center for Black Republican activity because many white men were unable or unwilling to engage in such politics because they felt it would damage their own reputations or put them at risk from black radicals. White Republicans also aidedblack Reconstructionists by granting them educational opportunities and access to housing and jobs that were unavailable to whites. This active role ofThomasvillein black Republican affairs led some locals to nickname it "The Ghetto." After Reconstruction ended in 1865, white Republicans gradually regained control of Thomasville through corruption and patronage while black Democrats slowly gained power within the community as head tax collectors . In 1972, Mayor Melvin Cato proposed relocating the County Courthouse from downtownThomasvilleto Morehead Citydue to concerns about possible dilapidated facilities within Morehead Cityand possible destruction of infrastructure due to budget deficits . However , despite objections from local politicians including Mayor Cato himself,Morehead Cityadopted Cato's proposal without giving serious consideration to alternatives
