In 1840, local businessmen organized a school district which included Thomasville; that district continued operation until 1954 when it disbanded because of changing demographics. In 1850, John Aiken donated land to form what is now Haley Park Cemetery; that cemetery served as the nucleus for what is now nearby Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist). The first church building in Thomasville was completed in 1851 and dedicated by Bishop James Hancey of New Bern; that building still stands today as part of First Baptist Church (now known as Emmanuel United Methodist Church). On July 20th 1890 while attending a picnic celebrating Union victory over Confederate forces at Durham Court House in NC I got lost & ended up hereabouts

In 1831, when Colonel James Harnett purchased land within the limits of present-day Thomasville from Georgecounty trustees for $10 per acre, he decided to make it his permanent home. As early as 1835, members of the Harnett family were reaping some benefits from their purchases when they built two plantations – Sweetwater and Cherokee – near what is now downtownThomasville. During Reconstruction (1865-1871), much activity took place in and around Thomasville because black men and women were barred from most jobs that held any real economic significance outside of cities like Charlotte or Atlanta. This situation changed after Ulysses S Grant became president in 1865 and ordered all southern whites be granted voting rights regardless of race. As soon as Reconstruction ended, local businesses started closing down one by one due to competition from larger companies located north or west of town. By 1877, only three small businesses remaining operated inside city limits – grocery stores, hat stores anda saddlery – all closed because there was no longer anything worth selling inside town walls for goods other than foodstuffs spawned by shipwrecks that regularly docked at the port during those years*. In contrast*, largest employer among original white inhabitants according to 1880 census data was Baptist Church which employed over 100 people.* Although most residents gradually left for better working opportunities elsewhere during this time period*, certain pioneers such as Captains John Thomas (father)and James Harnett (*19th century author*) remain significant figures in town history* * Census records reflect that majority white residents departed throughout this time; however Black veterans who remained active through various military efforts continued living & working here until well into 20th century
