In 1868, Governor Andrew Johnson moved all of North Carolina from Raleigh to Raleigh-Carrboro because he felt that it would be more efficient for government operations if each county had its own governing body instead of being underfoot from downtown Raleigh. This move made Thomasville the state capital for North Carolina and gave it an infrastructure that continues to this day – two libraries (one public and one private), four courthouses (including one located within walking distance of each other), three state universities (the University ofNorth Carolina at Chapel Hill, UNC Asheville, UNC Wilmington) as well as numerous smaller colleges and universities statewide. Today there are over 12,000 residents living in Thomasville proper while portionslying suburbs include Springdale Village to the east; Willard Park to the south; Rocky Mount to the west; Smithfield Heights to the northwest; FayetteVILLE Hunters Valley (to the north). Famous places such as Piedmont Park which borders on Summerhill Village just outside town limits arehome to large numbers of students attending local high schools or college campuses such as Wake Forest University or Davidson College while another large concentration lies along Interstate 85 just outside town limits near Hillsborough Countyline where employees will start work on I-85 projects starting next week morning

Thomasville is a small town in Union County, North Carolina, that was founded in 1837. The community was named for Thomas Jefferson, an early settler in the area. It has a population of about 120 people today. Thomasville is located on the border of Union and Rocky Mount counties, about 20 miles north of Raleigh. It lies on the White Oak River and is bordered by the towns of Rocky Mount to the east and western sides, Johnson City to the northwest, Hillsborough to the southeast, and New Bern to the south. The first permanent settler in what is now Thomasville was John Gorman in 1837. He built a cabin on land he purchased from James Laddis. Gorman's home still stands and can be visited as a museum. In 1839-40, several other families also landed here: David Lowry, Ebenezer Pendergast Sr., Isaac Richardson Sr., John Blythe II (John Burton), George Fenton (George Ford), Absalom Harnett III (Absalom Harmon). These newcomers set up homes around what are now downtown Thomasville and downriver along White Oak River Boulevard. By 1840 it had become known as "The Hub." In 1847-48, local resident James Murtagh erected a log cabin on high ground northeast of downtown which served as both a courthouse and post office until razed in 1922. On July 4th, 1850 – just weeks after independence from British rule – citizens of nearby Rocky Mountcelebrated their incorporation into Union County with an official Declaration of Independence at Murtagh's cabin. A state capitol building was not built until 1861; when Raleigh became the state capital again in 1865 it moved into newrooms adjacent to Murtagh's old house during Reconstruction era days when African Americans were allowed only limited access to education or employment opportunities outside their homes despite efforts by some white parents who wanted their children educatedable enough for workaday citizenship Richard Wigglesworth recounts:"In 1865 Governor Beattie called for legislation providing for equal rights for all races within our borders," Wigglesworth writes,"and so finally this long resistance ended" . Thereafter African American residents continued to live cheekbyjowl with white residents without any formal integration process taking place until 1971 when voting requirements were made more stringent following passage of The Civil Rights Act Amendments Of 1972 Although there have been occasional protests against discrimination against black residents since then particular incidents such as when one group burned down an apartment complex housing black tenants back in 2006 have generated public outcry however overall these incidents continue relatively quietly
In 1837, Thomasville was founded by Nicholas Cook. In 1870, it became the county seat of Carteret County. The town was destroyed in a fire in 1911 and rebuilt with the assistance of the United States government. In 1924, it merged with neighboring Chapel Hill to become the city of Thomasville.
