Thomasville, North Carolina is a town in Forsyth County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 6,492. The name of the town comes from Mount Tom (now called "Tom" Hill), which is located in Thomasville. The first settlement in what is now Thomasville was made on July 4, 1819 by John Ballard and James McDowell. In 1823, Captain George Aiken founded Fort Aiken in what is now downtown Thomasville. The town was named for General Andrew Johnson when he became President of the United States in 1865. Ammunition production began here during World War I and continued until the early 1970s when production shifted to other areas due to technology advances. By 1870-71, powder plants had been built at both locations and manufacturing operations were conducted at three different complexes totaling over 100 workers including artillery officers who manufactured shell cases and mortars for use on Union Army campaigns against Confederate forces during the American Civil War Ammunition Manufacturing Complex 1 on Government Road produced high-explosive shells while Ammunition Manufacturing Complex 2 employed lower explosives types such as dynamite and black powder. Ammunition Manufacturing Complex 3 produced rifle cartridges using a propellant mixture of buckshot lead shot with feathers and sawdust mixed with sugarcane molasses as fuel In 1930-31 American Arsenal Corporation merged with British munitions manufacturer Vickers plc., resulting in an increase in production to 1 million rounds per week from just under 400 thousand rounds per week before merger Oakridge Ammunition plant started making armor piercing ammunition in 1948 while still being used for hand grenades Atomic Energy Commission Site #1 producing uranium dust which was then converted into munitions . This site also handled packaging materials for irradiated food products . Uranium processing ceased circa 1984 but some munitions still remain today at this site

Thomasville is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,915 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan area. The first residents of what is now Thomasville were white people who moved from nearby Chapel Hill around 1819. By 1824, African Americans had started to arrive and almost all of the first settlers were black. The town was founded on December 12, 1852 when a group of seven men led by Jno.–John Sibley purchased land west of downtown for $3 per acre (1/4 mile²). The town was platted on February 8, 1853 and named for General Nathaniel Pines Butler. In 1865, Confederate general Robert Ewell ordered his units to retreat from Durham after learning that Union General John Buford had surrounded him with 11 infantry brigades and two cavalry divisions near Thomasville. Confederate general Joseph Johnston located Butler's unit near Thomasville while he pursued Buford and they skirmished before retreating back to Durham munitions depot east of town on October 10th that year. In 1865-1866 local farmers fought in the Battle of Rocky Mount which ended with Union victory over Confederate forces under Jubal Early On November 17th 1870 in a special election held in honor of Representative James Witherspoon who had died earlier that year, citizens voted 3-2 to create a new county called Moore County instead of Randolph County because Randolph was already majority slaveholding county according to state law at the time Additionally most whites decided not to move away from their homes during Reconstruction so many people lived in what is now called "Thomasvilite". A post office operated in Thomasvilite from 1870 until it closed on July 1st 1975 . In 1976-1981 an asphalt plant operated by Nacoochee Valley Asphalt Corporation produced paving stones used throughout much of eastern North Carolina . In 1984 four churches began construction on Church Street which became home to many businesses including Lowe's Hardware Store and First Baptist Church today When Interstate 40 was built through Durham soon after this community faced increased traffic as well as demolition efforts starting in the early 1990s due primarily to developers seeking zoning changes for high density housing developments; business owners organized themselves into "Opposition Groups" or just "Tommy groups" against the developers – this eventually led to some formative confrontations between drivers exiting I-40 onto Church Street atExit 51B (now NC 14) vs drivers coming out onto I-40 from exits 51A & 51C . Despite these confrontationsOccasionally there are more along sides but overall development has been generally positive since then One major issue facing the community again during recent years has been gentrification with influxes of expensive real estate investmentmenarchetypically targeting properties closeto schools and shopping malls bypassing downtown areas where lower priced residentials live
