Thomasville is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,692 at the 2010 census. The Thomasville School District serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The town was founded in 1836 by General John Sevier and his family after they left Raleigh following the Battle of New Bern. Sevier named it for his brother Thomas and his father's home county, Cumberland. In 1860, General Johnston's cavalry camped near the town while he was besieging Fort Fisher and many of the men came to trade with Johnston's army. When Johnston surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most of the men from nearby Jacksonville took part in this event as well including many who would later settle around Thomasville proper. On May 1st 1865, the Confederate general Robert Ewell visited Thomasville and paraded through downtown before departing for his new headquarters at Green Hill Cemetery west of town. In 1870–71 Jno Suggs built a large frame house on what is now Center Street which served as both a store and home until 1940 when it burned down to create an open space known today as Suggs Park (formerly called "Sevier Park"). In 1916 this property became part of present-day Thomasville Elementary School complex which opened its doors that same year. On December 6th 1913 citizens of Rutherford County met in downtown to adopt a resolution designating October 11th as "Thomasville Day" in honor of early settler James Fenton who had become mayoralty candidate for Rutherford County just two months earlier on September 26th 1913 during one of only two weeks that partisan voting could take place within the county due to lack of commissionership candidates. On November 7th 1914 voters registered over 2,000 names for incorporation into the new Town Council which included twentyseven women who would serve on various committees throughout their lifetimes such as schools or library supplies; today those same twenty-seven women are unknown but remain important members of local history represented by artifact No.(?) located within walking distance from City Hall along Main Street between Fourth & Fifth Streets

During Reconstruction following Reconstruction there were severe economic hardships faced by African Americans in America which led to increased crime rates throughout much of North Carolina because black men could not vote or own land. This situation led to calls for more stringent laws governing race relations within states across America including North Carolina where state legislators passed Jim Crow Laws that discriminated against African Americans at all levels from voting rights down to job opportunities. In 1896 mobs burned down several white-owned stores in downtown Durham after multiple arrests were made related to violence between races inside these stores; this event is now known as “The Great Fire of Durham” Aftermath saw some fairly significant changes beginning with passage of General Assembly Bill Noemer establishing what are now termed “opportunity zones” within urban neighborhoods intended specifically for blacks instead of just giving them white homes free from taxation; also during this time period social services such as welfare began becoming available statewide making life easier for residents regardless their color rating In 1865 prioritizations shifted back towards agricultural production when Union troops moved into Southern Carolina seeking revenge against Confederate soldiers who had surrendered at Appomattox Court House five months earlier This change followed new technology developments which promised better yields from newly seeded fields combined with technological advances such as railroads providing easy transportation access which allowed farmers greater flexibility than ever before in achieving consistent yields .
