Tarboro, North Carolina is a town located in Forsyth County, North Carolina. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Forsyth County and home to Tarboro University. The town's history can be traced back to 1792 when George Washington moved his family from Virginia to what is now Tarboro. In 1807, John Suggs founded the first store in Tarboro and built a cotton gin there. By 1829, Tarboro had a school and post office. The town was named after Governor Tryon of North Carolina. In 1857, the Ulysses S. Grant presidential inauguration was held in nearby Charlotte and many people in Tarboro came out to see it; this made Tarborne feel like their own city again for a few days! However, by 1860, most of Tarborough had been destroyed by fire caused by arsonists! In 1865-1866, Confederate General Robert Easley fought at Appomattox Court House near Petersburg while on tour of duty as commander of Army of Northern Virginia under General Johnston; he lost an arm during the battle. After the war ended on April 9th 1865 (4 years before President Lincoln died), General Easley returned home to find that much of his property had been burned down by Union troops retreating from Appomattox Court House! He reopened his house in 1895 and continued to live there until his death in 1923. His widow donated all but one room (the living room) of her husband's home in 1928 to serve as the nucleus for what would become Tarboro University! Today tarBorne still retains its small-town atmosphere with its close-knit community spirit and love of learning - something that has helped it stay strong over time despite some tough times!

It became a city on November 15, 1903. On May 25, 1957, Tarboro won its first state legislative election with Republican candidate Tom Fenton defeating Democrat John Boice by over 1 million votes. In 1969, the Town Council refused to ratify the City of Raleigh's merger with Tarboro despite heavy community support for the move. The town has experienced several difficult times throughout its history including Reconstruction following World War II when businesses were looted and destroyed; the economic recession that struck in 2007 and 2008; Hurricane Floyd which hit the area in October 2009; and wildfires that burned through much of 2011-2012. However, during these tough times there has been progress made such as new housing developments such as Riverbend Mobile Home Park which opened in late 2016; road repairs such as resurfacing of two main streets; and establishment of an economy development fund which helps local businesses attract investment. Tarboro was one of five communities within Wake County to become part of the University System of North Carolina (UNC) after it was announced by then UNC Chancellor Dr Pepper Coleman on December 13, 1998. UNC Chancellor James Meredith later said "It is clear from our study that Wake County would not havesuffered economically or academically if Durham had remained unincorporated." After years of beingnegotiated between UNCsystem administrators and each individual school district within Wake County - most notably Chapel Hill - Tarboro finally became part of UNC on July 1st 2002 when all but four districts joined forces with UNCcuellor Laird Cobb Jr.'s announcement that "the university system must expand rapidly to meet growing student needs across all campuses." On September 24th 2013 a fire destroyed most of Main Street in downtown Tarboro leaving no way for residents to return until October 2nd when firefighters extricated people from buildings on both sides of Main Street while trying to prevent additional fires from starting due to high heat levels caused by an overheating pipe
Tarboro was founded in 1795 by Captain John Tarleton. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Yadkin River and its access to trade. In 1806, Tarleton founded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Tarboro became a center for education. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the American Civil War.
