The first people to live in Tarboro were English settlers from Durham who founded a trading post there in 1795. They named it Elizabethtown after Princess Elizabeth of England who was then living in America. A mill built by these colonists still stands today and provides employment for many local residents. After Revolutionary War victories by the Americans against British forces, General Joseph Johnston ordered his troops to withdraw from North Carolina until they could be better organized and supplied. This made Tarboro an attractive destination for soldiers and their families looking for rest and relaxation after months of fighting. In 1819, Colonel Nathaniel Banks (later governor of South Carolina) bought some land around Tarboro from a group of Cherokee Indians who had been forced out of their traditional territory along the Yadkin River by General Cornwallis during the American Revolution. He developed this land into what became known as Banksville, named for Colonel Banks’s father-in-law, James Matthews banks (1765-1840). In 1827, Governor Swain granted two parcels of land to each family in Tarboro when he created Mecklenburg County from portions of Davidson County.. One parcel was put east of highway 275 and one parcel west of highway 275 between Canonsburg Road on the north side and Church Road on the south side which later became called Old State Street. A store built by Drury & Company opened its doors in 1837 just outside present day downtown Tarboro on Pee Dee Avenue across from High School #2 now known as Patton Middle School (). Drury's store continued to exist until 1909 when it burned down due to fire caused by lightning while being used as an ammunition depot during World War I This fire also destroyed much property inside present day downtown including Griggs Drugstore which stood until recently next door on Patton Boulevard opposite Patton Middle School (). Today you can still see some remnants remaining inside Drury’s building such as a sign that says “Drury Drug Store – Gone But Not Forgotten”
