Statesville was founded in 1795 by James Robertson as a trading post on the Catawba River. The town grew quickly and in 1803, it became the county seat of Davidson County. In 1827, Statesville was renamed to honor General Robert E. Lee, who had fought in the American Civil War. By 1900, Statesville had become an agricultural center with over 100 businesses and 2,000 residents. During World War II, Statesville played an important role in the production of munitions for the war effort. The town's famous rifle range was also instrumental in aiding Allied forces during the war. After the war, Statesville experienced a period of growth and development which helped it become one of North Carolina's most vibrant communities. Today, Statesville is home to a diverse population that includes many professionals and entrepreneurs as well as low-income citizens who support its vibrancy and economic progress.
