The Statesville Optical Supply Company was founded in 1907 by William H. States and his son, Harry States. The company became a leading optical retailer in the Southeast. In 1926, the company merged with The American OpticalCompany to form the first large-scale optical store chain in the United States. The store chain continued to grow until it became one of the largest retail companies in America. In 1951, the company merged with J.C. Penney to form Penn-Jillette Companies Incorporated (PJC). At PJC, William H.States retired as Chairman of the Board and Harry States became President and CEO of PJC. In 1979, Penn-Jillette Companies Incorporated was combined with Jewelers Exchange Corporation (JeE) to form Jewelers Exchange Corporation (JeE) Ltd., a holding company that continues to operate as an independent jeweler group today with over 120 stores across North Carolina and Tennessee
