George Washington Carver was born in Statesville, North Carolina on October 15th, 1875. He became an American agricultural scientist and educator, working at the University of Georgia and then at Tuskegee Institute. In 1942, he was appointed Director of the United States Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service in Atlanta. From 1951-1957, he served as Director of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington D.C., where he developed policies for USDA's research programs on food science and nutrition. Carver is also credited with establishing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated (DSTI) as a national organization for African Americans in America.
Statesville is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,629 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in what is now Statesville was made in 1792 when James Bradley and his family began to farm on land that he had bought from the Cherokees. The original name of the town was "Carolina." In 1819, John Ashe became the first white person to be elected mayor of Winston-Salem and helped found what is now known as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also donated land to make Statesville an incorporated community. When Interstate 85 was built through Union County in 1988, Statesville became one of its two stops. Today it features several large businesses including Blue Bell Creameries and Carrabba's Italian Grill; as well as smaller stores such as Lowe's Hardware and Dollar General. The high school has been renamed for former UPN star Jimmy Dean after he died in 2002. In recent years, Statesville has seen a boom in real estate development with properties like Courtyard by Marriott Raleigh–Durham Airport and Embassy Suites by Hilton located within walking distance of most residents. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants within minutes' walk or drive serving up delicious local cuisine: from small towns across America like Myrtle Beach SC (just down I-85) with its seafood restaurants to larger urban areas such as Charlotte NC (a few miles east on I-485). Statesville is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Statesville was founded in 1796 by General James Clinton Johnston as a post office on the Yadkin River for his troops who were engaged in a campaign against rebel forces under Nathan Bedford Forrest. Johnston named it after George Washington's home state of Virginia and set about to build a fortification to protect his men from Forrest's hostilities. The first store opened in 1802 and soon began to grow into an important center for trade on the river system between Charlotte and Raleigh. In 1811, Statesville became known as the "Birthplace of Western Christianity." A courthouse and jail were built here while other shops and taverns sprang up around town, providing lodging, food and medical care for soldiers fighting on various campaigns until 1865 when Confederate General Robert E. Lee ordered all military hospitals closed throughout eastern North Carolina because he believed they would be used to heal Union soldiers instead of assist their enemies during the war effort. By 1865, Statesville had become an important transportation hub with its own wharf on the Yadkin River where cotton warehouses were built along with numerous small mills that processed produce from surrounding farmssteads. Many residents also sent their children to nearby Durham University (later Duke) for education before returning home during World War II to help support their families wartime-related needs such as manufacturing jobs or serving in combat roles like those taken by many Americans during that time period In 1945, post-war economic growth brought new development to Statesvilie with construction of Interstate 75 running through it which helped spur new businesses into existence such as a hotel/motel complex called Renaissance Place which overlooked downtown Statevilie; however most importantly it created thousands of new resident tax base which led to revitalization efforts over ensuing years culminating in 2007 when Mayor Wally Opperman announced plans for a $25 million renovation project including demolition/ reconstruction of most local business districts within downtownStatevilie leading ultimately contribute $136 million dollars towards redevelopment since 2000 The wrecking ball finally hit Statesvilie’s once thriving commercial district late last year after more than 20 years languishing neglected following Hurricane Floyd’s destructive aftermath but what may have been lost forever are some previously hidden remnants from America’s early history – examples include original Federalist architecture dating back to 1796 whenGeneral JamesClinton Johnston established Townsville Ferry Landing upstream from present day Governors Quarters (now First Baptist Church), huge walls still remaining around several blocky brick buildings dating back at least century earlier associated with one particular early textile mill operations; two cannon emplacements per side facing downriver near present day Southeastern Boulevard just south of I-75 exit 403 “the very spot where Fort Sumter fell fifty years ago today”; these days only occasional visitors are able catch glimpses if they happen upon them while driving through rural areas anyhow Today though much has changed overall since then especially given how many times our community has been impacted by natural disasters both large & small – one could easily say that Statesville is slowly but surely startingeto recover . However there are still (& will always be) many reminders & stories left behind from past events here like this photo below captured recently shortly before Hurricane Floyd made landfall – notice just how differently things look now compared 25+ years later #statesvillenyc #ncwx
