Statesville is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Statesville was founded in 1792 by Captain James Robertson and his family as a trading post on Catawba River. In 1807, Statesville became the county seat of Lenoir County after it was moved from Morganton to what is now Statesville from nearby Salisbury. In 1875, whenLenoir County was divided into two parts, Statesville remained the only municipality in Lenoir County and its residents continued to use their original spelling of "Statesvil" until 1925. The first store in Statesville opened in 1827 and by 1830 there were five stores open in the community. A grist mill was built soon after and served as an important part of statesville's economic development until it burned down in 1860. A sawmill also operated during this time but it too went out of business around 1865. In 1865, John Pemberton donated land to the town for a courthouse and school district which would be built on what would later become State Street. The first public school building (which still stands) opened in 1870 with twelve students enrolledinder William Mayson as principal instructor for one term before moving to Winston-Salem where he held that position until 1886 when he resigned because of ill health.
