It is said that when William Strickland arrived at what is now Raleigh in 1586 he saw an open field that would soon be filled with houses and he decided to settle there permanently. In 1784, Captain John Banks and his wife Esther bought land from the Algonquian Indians and founded their own independent community called Grantsborough which stands today adjacent to Grantsvillle Cemetery on Henderson Street South (just south of Interstate 95). Grantsborough quickly became a bustling center for slave trade and cotton production because it was one of only two towns within three hours' ride of Charlotte where such trades could be conducted legally. By 1827, Grantsborough's population had increased to about 350 people becauseof this illegal activity but it declined again followinga severe economic downturn in 1828-1829 which affected many rural areas throughout North Carolina.(1) Despite this downturn however, Grantsborough continued to thrive as a commercial center dueits strategic location ontheDan River which made it easy for traders to move goods between Charlotte and Raleighand its close proximity to several plantations.(2) By 1861 however, although Grantsborough still remained prosperous through its legal activities relatedto slavery (), it had reached its peak due largelytothefactthatitwastheonly town within three hours' driveofCharlottecontainingbotha railway station(which facilitated shipping goods)andan arsenal.(3) This allowed Charlotteto control much more traffic passing through state lines than any other towninNorthCarolinaduringthisperioddue tothefactthat CharlotetovideafiberroadthroughstatelinesdirectlytoRaleighinsteadof havingtotravelthroughstatesVILLEorGreensboro asthatwouldvaryiroute.)Nevertheless,, over time Grantsville arguably lost some key aspects of its former prosperity such asitsabilitytowithstandheavy flooding rains during storms like Hurricane Andrew or Hurricane Floyd,.
