Gun lights were first developed in Statesville, North Carolina in the early 1800s. Gun lights were used to signal warning signals to other vessels and as a means of navigation during night times. The first gun light was designed by Captain John Southerland and manufactured by Elisha Gray.Captain Southerland's gun light was based on the design of a French lighthouse keeper's lamp. The initial model had an 8-inch diameter cylindrical firework that could be lit at one end and then projected up into the air with a range of 100 yards. By 1802, Captain Southerland had replaced his original firework with a more powerful version that could be lit at both ends and project out to a distance of 500 feet. This new model became known as the "Southerland Rocket." In 1827, Captain John Broughton installed a secondgun light on the wharf near his plantation in Statesville. This light was known as the "Broughton Rocket." These two guns lights were eventually replaced by a single gun light in 1841 when Captain James Aiken erected a new wharf which served as the center for all gun lights throughout Stateville. The first electric GUN LIGHT system was installed in Statesville by Mr. Cramer in 1898 using 4 large nickel-cadmium batteries supplied by buxom ELECTRICITY COOPERATIVE OF AMERICA (the predecessor to today's GE). At that time, GUN LIGHTS were still manually operated from an armory or staging area adjacent to wharf where they would be blasted off by hand with cannon powder until reaching their destination port or anchorage

Statesville is a town in Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yancey County. The first settler in what would become Statesville was James Hargrave in 1799. He and his family moved from New York to western North Carolina and started a lumber business. In 1809, Captain John Sutherlin founded an academy in what is now Statesville with the goal of educating future missionaries. The academy continued until 1839 when it was closed due to financial difficulties. In 1871, Fayette Henderson purchased the academy property and began construction on a new school that would be called Henderson State Normal School (HSN). On October 3, 1872, HSN opened its doors to students from all over southeastern North Carolina for the first time. With enrollment totaling 1,100 students by 1880-181), HSN became one of the most popular educational institutions in eastern NC and eventually served as a model for many schools throughout the state during this period of rapid growth. In 1905-1906 Ethel Meeks Price built an addition to HSN which became known as Price Hall after her husband Drury Price who also served as president of HSN from 1915-1920 and 1923-1945. Drury Price's contribution to education in Statesville cannot be overemphasized; he expended great effort into promoting public libraries throughout eastern North Carolina which have had a significant impact on local community development and social programs today . In 1924–1925 Drury Price delivered lectures on "American Education under National Socialism" at Yale University where he met Franklin D White who later helped found Teachers College at Columbia University which gave rise to America's second largest university after Harvard University Drury Price died in 1945 but his contributions will live on throughPrice Hall which continues to serve as an important part of Statesvilie's civic life today

Stateville was founded by James Tryon in 1795. The town was named for General George Washington and is located on the North Carolina side of the Catawba River. In 1824, Stateville became the seat of government for what is now Moore County. The town developed into a cotton plantation center and eventually became an important economic hub in the region. In 1865, Stateville was incorporated as a city and quickly grew in size and importance. It remained an important community until the late 20th century.
