Statesville is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Winston-Salem–Forsyth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1824 by General Richard McDowell and his wife Elizabeth (née Roanoke). McDowell moved from Raleigh to establish the town on land that he had acquired from Governor Tryon. The first post office was established in 1829. In 1830, John Gadsden purchased thetown and moved it to its present location on U.S. Route 421 about east of Winston-Salem. In 1851, Statesville became a part of Vance County when it was formed from parts of Forsyth and Halifax counties. In 1882, Stateville merged with neighboring Union County to form Forsyth County again. In 1925, Statesville lost its status as an incorporated municipality when it passed into effective merger with the unincorporated community of Surry Hills which also included Surry Mills and other smaller villages within its boundaries
