In 1863, the state legislature built a metropolis at Rocky Mount and named it after General James K. Polk, who had been president during the American Civil War. In 1907, Spring Lake became one of two communities in North Carolina that adopted prohibitionism as their political ideology. In 1916, when Prohibition ended in America, Fall River also adopted prohibitionism as their political ideology.
