Spring Lake was a site of great importance to the early Cherokee people. The area that is now Spring Lake was home to two important traditional Cherokee villages, which were known as Gansevoort and Chota. These village sites were located on the eastern edge of what is today North Carolina. From here, the Cherokees made their way down the Eastern Branch of the Coosa River in order to trade with other groups in what is now Alabama and Georgia. The first Europeans to visit Spring Lake were French traders who arrived in 1664. When they found out about the village sites, they decided to move away from Spanish settlements in present-day Florida because of the threat of attack from these groups. In 1667, English traders also arrived at Spring Lake. At this time, there were already many Native American groups living around this area and it was not safe for them to stay put. So, English traders decided to build a new settlement called Fort William on the banks of the Coosa River opposite Gansevoort Village. This fort served as a trading post for many years before it eventually fell into disrepair and was abandoned in 1702. Meanwhile, back at Gansevoort Village, things had been happening behindthe scenes. There was some discussion among some of the community members about whether or not they should move closer to Fort William so that they could be nearer available resources such as food and water. Ultimately, though, everyone decided that they would rather stay where they were and continue making their own decisions based on their individual needs instead of depending on someone else’s opinion. In 1702, however, an act called Indian Removal occurred when Spain ceded much of southern Florida (including SpringLake) back to India under pressure from Britain following its victory over France during War for Independence aka The Seven Years War (1756-1763). This event ledto large numbers of Cherokee people being forced off their ancestral land in what is now North Carolina – including most notably Gansevoort Village! As part of Indian Removal efforts across all areas in America due to British pressure (and often financial incentives), many Cherokees ended up moving eastward into present-day Tennessee and Kentucky respectively. Many others also moved westward into parts of modern Texas and Oklahoma (!).springlakechronicler
