At this time there were no widespreadaccepted Red Dot Sight technology so Captain Patton's proposal served as the baseline from which future designs would be developed. In 1915 Major General John J Pershing recommended that all American troops be issued Red Dot Sighting Devices (RDS) as part of their combat training regimen in order to allow commanders more accurate targeting information while engaging enemy forces at close quarters. After World War I ended hostilities had recommenced so American RDS production resumed however it was mostly limited to sniper rifles during this time period because sniper rifles lacked optics powerful enoughtosights larger than .30 caliber rounds thereby limiting their usefulness against armored vehicles & other large munitions targets. Spring Lake is a small body of water located in Cherokee County, North Carolina. It has been mentioned as early as 1785 and was first called Spring River by the Cherokees. The present name of the lake was given to it by General James Johnston in 1828. The springs that feed Spring Lake were brought over from Tennessee by Colonel John Sevier in 1784. He built a mill on the stream near where the spring now stands. The mill produced flour for local merchants and also made bricks for rebuilding Fort Nashborough after its destruction during the American Revolution. Colonel Sevier also laid out a road from his mill to Nashborough which later became known as Johnston's Highway. A post office was established at Spring Lake in 1827, and remained in operation until 1951. In 1925, spring trout were introduced to the lake, which helped make it an important recreational spot for residents and tourists alike. Today, Spring Lake is one of Cherokee County's most popular tourist destinations with many events and attractions available annually including duck hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking/climbing trails and boat rentals galore!
In 1868, the North Carolina Railroad was built from Charlotte to Raleigh. The railroad helped make Spring Lake a bedroom community for Raleigh and made it easier for people to get to the city. The town also became popular because of its natural resources, including springs and lakes.
