In 1865, Aiken county commissioners purchased land around Spring Lake from a group of businessmen who had developed it into a small resort area for summer visitors. The commissioners built a large dam across the spring at what is now known asmilepost 9 on State Route 723 (now milepost 10 on US 192) andleasedItto localsand touristsfor use until 1928 when it was abandoned again due to water shortages caused by geology changes within its boundaries.
