In 1828, McClure donated a tract of land at present-day Springlake to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of its gift to Duke University.. The university built three dormitories onsite – East Campus, West Campus, and South Campus – which remain today as reminders of its relationship with McClure’s original donation.. After being sold again in 1893 by Jeptha Burchfield, this piece of property became known as Highland Park until it was annexed into Durham County when that county was created in 1880.. In 1907, Drury Easley donated an acreage adjacent to present day Springlake “as long as it forms an open space suitable for restation or residence within easy reach thereof upon proper landing grounds…. No part may be platted off without first obtaining written consent from said Drury Easley Adventurer Company…” This parcel eventually became known as SpringLake Drive..
