They found that the depression was rich in coal and oil shale which they used to produce munitions during the Revolution. After the Revolution, springs became popular tourist destinations in North Carolina because of their natural beauty and scientific interest. The first steamboats reached Spring Lake in 1825, but there were no commercial fishing opportunities until after World War II when a new industry developed around fishing for catfish and trout. Today, fishing is an important aspect of life at Spring Lake because of its many species of fish including crappie, bass, white perch, red drum, electric Bass and bluegill. SpringLake National Wildlife Refuge covers 723 acres (270 hectares) north of Raleigh along I-85 between Wake Forest University School of Veterinary Medicine and Research Park off US 17 near Durham; this refuge has over 132 miles (215 kilometers) of trails that connect it with other national wildlife refuges across North Carolina as well as nearby states such as Georgia and South Carolina
The first permanent settlement in Spring Lake was made by the Pee Dee Indians in 1763. The town was named for springs near where it was located. The first post office was established in 1868, and the first store opened in 1870. Spring Lake became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1970.
