The first school in Spring Lake was built in 1903 by Wm. Denton and operated until 1916 when it was replaced by a schoolhouse which also served as a courthouse from 1907 to 1911.

Spring Lake was originally known as Whitewater Creek. It was named for the spring that was located in the area. The first settlers to live in Spring Lake were Mr. and Mrs. Hodes, who started up a small farm in 1881. By 1903, there were five families living at Spring Lake. In 1912, Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved from Marion County to Spring Lake because of the growing population of Springlake and other nearby townships in North Carolina. They operated a small grocery store until their death in 1978. From 1912 until 1916, when it was taken over by the United States government as part of Fort Bragg during World War I, the land around Spring Lake belonged to Confederate forces under General John Johnston. After the war ended, American authorities took over control of the land aroundSpringLake and began development on it primarily for timber production purposes. However, beginning in 1946, residents of SpringLake petitioned to have their community formed into a town within its own borders pursuant to Article VII of the North Carolina Constitution which granted them this right; however, no action was ever taken on their request until 1976 when an act was passed creating Greenville Township within Greenville County effective January 1st 1977; therefore Springs Lakes town status has been with Greenville Township since then
Some of the most famous people associated with Spring Lake include Confederate General Robert E. Lee, entrepreneur Andrew Carnegie, and author Eleanor Roosevelt. The lake served as a location for several movies, including "The Great Gatsby" and "To Kill a Mockingbird".
