In 1998,SpringLake became an official city within Greensboro County after being approved by voters. This marks the first time that a municipality has been established within Greensboro County since its establishment as a county on November 3rd, 1870

Spring Lake is a small, isolated community located in Swain County, North Carolina. The community was established in 1892 by settlers from Tennessee and Georgia. The population of Spring Lake peaked at around 100 people in the early 1900s, but has since decreased to only a handful of residents today. The history of Spring Lake begins with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Swain County. In 1802, Governor James Moore sent an expedition up the Catawba River to explore new land north of Charlotte. One group of colonists, led by John Sutherlin, made their way downriver and coming overland encountered Native Americans living on the cataracts that form the lake below. After two weeks of traveling through difficult terrain they reached Spring Lake on July 10th. Initially, SpringsLake consisted primarily of cleared pastureland surrounded by trees and brush growth. However, over time more development began to take place within the confines of Spring Lake itself as settlers began purchasing land within its boundaries. By 1901, there were four stores and three churches located withinSpringLake proper while another six businesses were situated along railroad tracks leading into town from outlying areas such as Indian Creek and Big Branch Creek settlements (these businesses would later become known as "The Diner" and "The Store", respectively). In 1916, General Sherman visited North Carolina during his Overthrow Tour when he discovered that Reconstruction was not happening as planned. As a result, President Woodrow Wilson signed an executive order allowing for African Americans to be employed in certain fields such as agriculture without losing their black citizenship or social status which greatly impacted Spring Lake’s demographics at that time (approximately 100% black). This change resulted in many African American men being brought into town to work on farms while their families lived elsewhere; this created tension between white settlement adjacent to Spring Lake and African American settlement farther away which would continue until after World War II when both groups came together under one banner – the United States military – seeking emancipation from Jim Crow Laws throughout much of America Southern than before%. Since its establishment in 1892 spring lake has seen some major changes including: A fire destroyed most of downtown swain county april 1922 ;A tornado destroyed several homes january 1951 ;A hurricane struck nc november 1988 destroying most buildings however no lives were lost
