The first Europeans to visit Spring Lake were the Spanish in 1565. The Dutch also visited the area in 1624, but no permanent settlement was made until 1792 when John Sevier and his family founded Sevier County. The first school in North Carolina was established in 1814 at what is now known as Spring Lake School. In 1922, the state legislature authorized construction of a dam on Spring Lake which created a community called Parkersburg downstream. Parkersburg became an official town within North Carolina in 1949. The population of Spring Lake peaked at over 60,000 in 1960, but has since declined precipitously due to various factors including development upstream and away from the lake.
