Spring Lake is a reservoir in North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The name was given to the body of water by General William T. Sherman during his campaign against the Confederate States of America in 1864. The area that now makes up Spring Lake was originally a hunting ground for white settlers and their dogs were often used to track game. In 1868, a small dam was built on the river and the first water supply was installed. By 1871, an electric company had been established in Charlotte and it became necessary to bring water from Spring Lake to serve this new community. A larger dam was constructed in 1922 and improvements were made to the infrastructure including installation of a power plant and recreation areas such as boat ramp, picnic area, fishing pier, and swim beach. In 1974-1975, work began on enlarging Spring Lake which created muchneeded habitat for fish populations among other things. Today, SpringLake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in North Carolina thanks to its pristine environment and many activities available for visitors such as swimming, fishing, boating, swimming lessons, hiking/mountain biking/climbing/skiing/, etc
The area that is now Spring Lake was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. The first English settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and they started to develop the land around Spring Lake. By the 1850s, there were a few small settlements located around Spring Lake. However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that Spring Lake began to grow into a major town. In 1907, SpringLake became one of the original fifty towns in North Carolina.
