The history of binoculars in Spring Lake, North Carolina goes back to at least the 1840s. When farmers began using binoculars as a form of agriculture and surveying tools, they needed a way to see objects up close. They developed the use of glass eyeglasses which gave them a better view but also made it difficult for them to make observations during evening darkness. In 1851, some men from Raleigh founded the Raleigh Glass Works in what is now Spring Lake. This company produced high-quality optics for many years until it closed its doors in 1924. From this time on, binocular production shifted from Durham to Spring Lake because there was no other place in town with the resources or equipment necessary to produce these devices. Many people who have used binoculars over the years have shared stories about how they started out as amateurters and then became professionals. Some of these individuals include Dr. Edwin Hubble, inventor of modern astronomy; Tom Brokaw, journalist and author; and Roy Hruby, curator at The American Museum of Natural History who has been credited with developing one of the first photography workshops in America. Spring Lake is a small, rural community located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Spring Lake is a mixture of agricultural and forested land; it has a large pond which provides water to many residents and businesses. The community is home to the Spring Lake Community School District and the Spring Lake Golf Club. The first Europeans to visit Spring Lake were French traders who landed on the lake in 1624. By 1814, American Revolutionary War veterans had settled in Spring Lake and began trading with Native Americans for goods such as corn, tobacco, hides, deer meat, furs and other items. In 1839-1840 surveyors documented springs near present-day Spring Lake that supplied water for townsquare development; this spring also served as the first drinking fountain for townspeople. In 1915-1916 developers built a dam on State Road 246 across from present-day SpringLake golf club to provide irrigation water for crops in what is now part of Lynchburg County; after World War I the United States Army Corps of Engineers increased crop production by enlarging the dam. In 1928, the post office closed, and the town became an incorporated village. In 1950, Spring Lake absorbed neighboring communities of Bear Creek and Westover Heights. Today, Spring Lake has a population of just under 500 people and is one of the smallest towns in North Carolina. Its main economic activity is fishing and hunting.
The land that is now Spring Lake was first settled in the late 1700s. By 1800, it had become a part of North Carolina. The area around Spring Lake was used for hunting and fishing by the natives until the early 1800s. The first white people to live in this area were settlers from Jamestown, Virginia. They arrived in 1802 and started farming the land around Spring Lake. By 1810, there were about 10 families living on the property. However, by 1830, only 2 families remained on the property. By 1840, only 1 family still lived on Spring Lake. In 1845, a school was built on Spring Lake and operation began in that year. In 1870, a post office was established at SpringLake and mail service began operations in that year too. In 1907, a dam was constructed at SpringLake to help with water availability for agricultural purposes. This dam caused some flooding which destroyed many homes and businesses along the banks of the lake. However, due to financial donations from local residents, a new community was built upstream of the old dam which still uses water fromSpringLake today
