The town was founded in 1868 by men who were looking for a place to retire after years of farming in the area. The name Spring Lake comes from the spring that used to flow near the town. The first store in Spring Lake was built on Main Street in 1868. By 1903, there were six stores and two restaurants in town. In 1910, the population of Spring Lake had increased to over 100 people and it had begun developing into a small city with its own police department and fire department. By 1928, however, the population had decreased to just 40 people and the city ceased operations. Over time, Spring Lake has been home to many famous individuals including musicians like Sonny Bono and Ray Charles; athletes such as Jim Thorpe and John Heisman; writers such as Harper Lee and Wrotey Pritchett; actors such as Ronald Reagan and Tom Hanks;and politicians such as Bob Dylan, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Barack Obama. Today, Spring Lake is an unassuming community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it. The Spring Lake area was historically part of the Cherokee Nation. The first European to visit this area was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. In 1794, General James Howe leased land at Spring Lake from the Cherokees for pasture and farming purposes. On July 1, 1815, during the Creek War, General Alexander Macomb attacked Fort McIntosh on the Chickasaw Nation Reservation and burned several buildings there before withdrawing with his forces. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of the end of the Creek War. In 1845, a post office was established at Spring Lake by order of Colonel John Rankin. The first postmaster was George Waddell. In 1865, Captain Alfred Ewing built a sawmill here which continued operation until it closed in 1868. In 1870, Confederate Major General Nathaniel Pemberton attacked Union Brigadier General Richard Hurlbut's command near Spring Lake while they were besieging Fort Donelson on Tennessee's Cumberland River border. Aftermath of this battle resulted in Hurlbut being court-martialed and sentenced to life imprisonment at Hardeeville Prison in Georgia; however he later escaped from prison and rejoined Union forces during Sherman's march through Georgia in February 1871. In 1893 (or earlier), a millrace called "The Forks" ran across SpringLake opposite wherepresent day Little Falls Road crosses it
