In 1792, Spring Lake was the main stop on a wagon road that ran from Cherokee Point to Fayetteville. In 1810, it became part of North Carolina and in 1827 it was renamed Spring Lake after President James K. Polk. The lake has been a popular swimming spot since the 1700s and is now home to over 100 boat launches and 12 fishing ponds.
