During World War II, Spring Lake served as a staging area for troops coming upriver from North Carolina to participate in the war. After the war ended, most of the businesses declined and fell into receivership. However, one business still exists today–the Spring Lake Bank. Spring Lake has experienced many changes over its history. Its population decreased during Prohibition because people could not get alcohol; however, it increased after prohibition ended because people were able to buy alcohol again. The population also grew during the 1960s when North Carolina legalized marijuana; however, this change did not have much impact on Spring Lake because dispensaries still exist today. The population had decreased again by 2010 when there were no job openings due to retirements and layoffs across most industries in Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville; however, this trend has slowly started to reverse over time with more jobs opening in recent years due to automation and other factors like Brexit
The community of Spring Lake was founded in 1836 by James and Susannah Caldwell. The town prospered due to the natural resources it had, such as springs and timber. In 1851, a post office was established in Spring Lake, and mail was delivered from nearby towns. By 1870, the population of Spring Lake had decreased to just five people, but it continued to grow thanks to its abundant resources. In 1931, the town's first school opened and remained in operation until 1978. In that year, the town became a part of Chapel Hill-Durham County.
